NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A judge ruled that Tennessee residents can vote by mail.
The court ruled the state must make absentee voting available to every voter for all elections in 2020.
This includes the August 6 primary and November 3 general election.
The American Civil Liberties Union, ACLU, brought the case to court for several Tennesseans who believed their health would be in jeopardy if forced to vote in person because of COVID-19.
Tennessee required voters to provide an excuse to vote by mail.
Social distancing measures and self-quarantining were not included on the list of approved excuses.
The court also ordered the state to create a public information campaign that informs voters about the elimination of the excuse requirement to vote by mail.
