HERNANDO, Miss. — A Mid-South businessman says he is in the process of building an indoor basketball facility like none the region has seen.
Greg Drumwright told FOX13 he has always loved basketball but he realized there was a need for a better training facility in the area.
Drumwright said the idea came from a basketball facility he saw on the West Coast. He has two sons who play and now he is building the Fieldhouse and Courtroom off of Green T Road in Hernando.
Ultimately it will have 8 NCAA and NBA size courts.
“We wanted this location to be located so it’s easy for a kid from Downtown Memphis to just hop on I-55 and come straight down and get off at I-269 at the first exit and it’s 17 minutes from Collierville and we’re kind of in the center as far as DeSoto County kids go,” Drumwright said.
Drumwright said they should be done building the Fieldhouse and Courtroom by July.
He said he already has coaches trying to book time.
“Gym time is not going to be a hard thing to fill,” Drumwright said. “Coaches are looking for places to host tournaments where they know that they will have air and they know that when they get there the gym will be unlocked and ready to go.”
Drumwright shared blueprints of the facility with FOX13. He said the biggest inspiration for the facility was the fact that nothing like it has been done in the Mid-South and it is very much needed.
“There is really not a great place for you to play basketball, said Drumwright. “It’s kind of the most underrated sport in DeSoto County. The nearest multi-court facility is in Jackson.”
Drumwright said the total cost to build the facility will be about $4 million dollars.
He said it will also be a place where scouts can get a look at talent who could wind up being future college or NBA stars.
