Local teen raises money in response to India’s COVID-19 surge

Memphis, Tenn. — The rising death toll from COVID-19 in India has prompted a Germantown teenager to take action and try to make a difference.

Smayan Sompalli, who is 15, has talked with family members in India who have described bodies piled on streets and a shortage of medicines.

Sompalli’s grandmother contracted the virus just five days after her second vaccine shot.

He decide to start a GoFundMe to raise money to buy PPE and other things needed there.

Sompalli told us, “Everything is intertwined, there’s companies all around the planet, people all around the planet. We don’t just live in a bubble. One thing we can learn from this, is that we’re all connected and we all have to be there to support each other.”

After just one day, Sompalli raised more than $2700.
