Man charged after allegedly kidnapping daughter, assaulting her mother

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A 20-year-old man is behind bars after Memphis police say he kidnapped his daughter and assaulted her mother.

Officers responded May 22 to the 2400 block of E. Hillview Drive.

A woman told police she got into an argument with her child’s father, Dajavantay Black.

Records show the argument became physical, and Black allegedly punched the victim in her left eye.

The woman told police Black grabbed their 5-month-old daughter, DaNova Brown, and left on foot.

According to an affidavit, witnesses told police they saw Black holding the infant and wearing a black diaper bag.

A City Watch was issued for DaNova.

Memphis police said she was found safe.

SCSO deputies checked a previous address for Black in the 6900 block of Lagrange Circle, but the property was vacant and condemned, the affidavit said.

A witness told police he saw Black with the infant crossing over Airways Boulevard at Ketchum Road, but officers could not find them in the area.

Another person told police she saw Black walking on Imogene with the baby, but officers could not find him in that area, records show.

He was arrested and charged with Custodial Interference, a felony.

Records show he is scheduled to appear in court Monday.
