Man charged after trying to kidnap a 2-year-old, police say

DYERSBURG, Tenn. — A Dyersburg man was arrested and charged after police said he tried to kidnap a child.

Monday evening around 8:00 p.m., Dyersburg police responded to a report of an attempted kidnapping at the Forked Deer River Park.

Officers said they were told a man wearing a blonde wig approached a man and woman who were at the park with a 2-year-old child and attempted to take the child.

The man who was with the child pushed the would-be kidnapper down and then chased him away, police said.

The suspect was later identified as 53-year-old Russell Barton.

Someone told officers Barton was at the H & S Market on South Main. Officers said they located Barton and took him into custody without incident.

Barton was still in possession of the wig and a braided rope, police said.

Barton was charged with criminal attempt to commit kidnapping and was jailed. Barton appeared in Dyersburg City Court and was being held on a $25,000 bond pending court action Friday at 9:00 a.m.
