Woman shot to death inside car in Cordova identified by police

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — UPDATE (1/7/22):

Memphis police confirmed the woman who was shot and killed was 49-year-old Juanita Jones.


A man is charged with murder after a woman was shot and killed inside a car in Cordova.

The incident happened Jan. 2 just before 1 p.m. in the 8100 block of Walnut Grove.

A caller told police a car hit a pole, according to an affidavit.

Later, police learned a woman had been shot inside the car.

She was taken to Baptist East in a private vehicle, where she was pronounced dead, police said.

A man at the scene identified himself as Bryndon Smith.

Smith said he accidentally shot the woman after an argument, according to the affidavit.

Smith told police he had been dating the woman for two years.

He said they were arguing in her car when he pulled out a pistol and accidentally shot her, police said.

Smith was taken to 201 Poplar and charged with first-degree murder.
