Man drowns in Germantown drainage ditch while trying to save child, police say

GERMANTOWN, Tenn. — A man died Tuesday after drowning in a drainage ditch in Germantown while trying to save a child, according to Germantown Police.

Germantown Police said that a child fell into the water in a drainage ditch in Riverdale Park around 6:17 p.m. on Tuesday, August 9.

The child’s father and 37-year-old William Drennan jumped in to save the boy, police said.

The child’s father and his son emerged from the water on the north side of Neshoba, but Drennan could not be found, according to Germantown Police.

First responders eventually did find Drennan and rushed him to Methodist Germantown Hospital but the he did not survive, Germantown Police said.

The child was treated and released from the hospital and his father was treated for a minor injury, according to police.
