Man gets life sentence for murdering his ex-girlfriend, DA says

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis man has been sentenced to life in prison for murdering his ex-girlfriend in a jealous rage.

In 2015, 33-year-old Antonio R. Davis broke into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment by shooting through a sliding glass door, hitting his former lover, Lakeyel Hurd, in the process, according to Shelby County District Attorney Amy Weirich.

As Hurd’s friend knelt by her side tending to her wound, Davis demanded to know who Hurd had been seeing, threatening to shoot Hurd’s friend if she didn’t tell him, the DA said.

Weirich said that Davis opened fire on his ex-girlfriend anyway, shooting her three times in the head and killing her there in the apartment.

As Davis followed with his gun drawn, Hurd’s friend ran to the room to protect four children who were in the apartment, including a one-year-old child, Weirich said.

Davis took the woman’s cell phone to keep her from calling police, but he was soon arrested in a motel just outside of Nashville and charged with first-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary, according to the DA’s office.

On Dec. 2., 2021, Davis received a life sentence for Hurd’s murder. He will be sentenced for the other charges in January, Weirich’s said.
