Memphis, Tenn. — A Memphis man faces a charge of second-degree murder after police said he shot and killed a man after a fight and then stole his car.
According to the Memphis Police Department, 30-year-old Raymond Benson and Ivan Payton got into a fight around 5 a.m. on a Saturday morning in Nutbush.
Police said once the physical fight was over, Benson separated from Payton, pulled out a gun and shot him several times, hitting Payton in the chest.
Benson then hopped in Payton’s 2007 Ford Focus and took off, fleeing the scene on Burr Road, according to a police affidavit.
People who witnesses the fight picked Benson out of a lineup, according to police.
Court records show that Benson was arrested Saturday, less than a week after a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Benson faces one count of second-degree murder, one count of being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun and one felony count of theft of property for allegedly taking Payton’s car.
