Man shot and killed at Kroger gas station, Memphis Police say

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is dead after a shooting at a Kroger gas station, according to the Memphis Police Department (MPD). MPD said the shooting happened just after noon Sunday.

The shooting happened at a Kroger at Riverdale Road and E. Shelby Drive.

The suspect fled in a dark-colored sports car, possibly a Chevrolet Camaro or a Ford Mustang, MPD said.

Within half an hour of the shooting, the gas station was taped off and its parking lot was crawling with investigators.

“As we were going down Shelby Drive, some guys came through shooting at the Kroger and they shot a guy,” Tameka Smith, who witnessed the shooting, said. “Multiple. Like, over six shots.”

Smith said she lives just blocks away from the crime scene and was driving by when the shooting took place. She watched as the shooter pulled up and killed the victim while he was filling up his car.

“He got out of his car, he was going back for some gas and as he was coming back to his car, they shot him,” she said.

Smith said she has witnessed violence before, but seeing it happen at the normally-peaceful shopping center was a shock- especially since she had her 10- and 13-year-old sons in the car with her.

“What’s going through my mind- I have younger boys and they also saw that,” Smith said.

She said she is worried about the impression the incident could make on them.

“As black young men, seeing things like that,” Smith said. “Some black young men think it’s cool to do that.”

She said she wants to see the community take action to stop the killing.

“Memphis is outrageous. We need more support from our people,” Smith said. “Come together and stop the violence.”

A spokesperson for Kroger said safety is a top priority and the company is working with law enforcement to aid in the investigation.
