Man arrested in killing of alleged thief at store near University of Memphis, records show

Memphis, Tenn. — An alleged shoplifter is dead over $100 worth of merchandise.

The Memphis Police Department is investigating a shooting that happened Sunday night, leaving one man dead.

Police said they responded to a shooting call at Scooties One Stop, located at 3566 Walker Ave., around 7:30 p.m.

According to an affidavit, officers found a man lying on the floor with a gunshot wound to his chest.

MPD said the man was immediately rushed to Regional One Hospital but later died from his injuries.

The store owner and his son said the victim attempted to run out of the store with $100 worth of merchandise, records show.

Police said the store owner’s son locked the door when the shoplifter tried to run out of the store with the merchandise, and the shoplifter could not exit.

According to the affidavit, a man identified as Robert Buie shot the victim.

Buie was taken to Homicide, where he admitted to shooting the victim, records show.

Buie worked as a stock person and security for the store.

He told police the victim was not armed, records show.

According to police, Buie said he told Christopher Nettles to get down on the floor and said Nettles would not comply.

Buie is charged with Second-Degree Murder and Convicted Felon in Possession of a Handgun.

He previously pled guilty to burglary in 2001, records show.

An employee who did not want to reveal his identity because of fear of retaliation told FOX13 shoplifting happens there all the time.
