Man wanted for shooting woman with 1-year-old child inside car, police say

HELENA-WEST HELENA, Ark. — Helena-West Helena Police are searching for a 19-year-old man following a shooting that left a 21-year-old woman fighting for her life.

Officers were called to the Helena Regional Medical Center Emergency Room Thursday afternoon when a woman was brought to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the head.

She was later moved to Regional One Hospital in Memphis for treatment. Police said she was in critically stable condition.

At the hospital, officers spoke to an 18-year-old who said he was driving with the woman and a 1-year-old in the car near Cleburne and South Sebastian Streets when he saw a man he recognized as Xavier Arter.

The man told officers Arter approached his car and fired several shots.

He said he drove away and then realized the woman had been hit.

The 1-year-old child was in the back seat when the shots were fired and was not hurt.

The Helena-West Helena Police Department is currently searching for Xavier Arter.
