Caregiver arrested for assaulting elderly man, Memphis police say

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is behind bars after allegedly assaulting an elderly man while he was trying to bathe himself.

Memphis police got a call to 3215 Thirteen Colony Mall, CJ Loving Care on Sept. 12, 2021.

A woman told police she had come to visit her brother at the home.

Police documents show he had a bloated face, red bloodshot eyes, and swollen black eyes.

The woman told police she notified the owner of the care home about her brother’s injuries.

The victim is diagnosed with schizophrenia and dementia, records show.

The owner said he was not aware of the incident and arrived to talk with the victim’s caregiver, an employee named James Thomas.

Thomas said the victim attempted to attack Thomas, but instead punched himself, according to police.

Thomas later modified his story, claiming the victim was fighting as he tried to put him in the bathtub, so he punched him.

The man was taken to the hospital, where doctors said his eye sockets were fractured, according to police.

Thomas has been charged with assault and aggravated abuse of an elderly or vulnerable adult.
