MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is in jail after Memphis police confirmed three people died and one person was injured in an overnight quadruple shooting.
The shooting happened just before 8:30 p.m. Sunday in the 2500 block of Dunn Avenue in Bethel Grove.
Police said a resident at the location shot four people.
Three victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
One person was taken to Regional One in non-critical condition.
The suspect turned himself in and is in custody, MPD said.
FOX13 spoke with a woman who said she’s the girlfriend of the man police arrested.
She said the violent act reflected mental illness.
“Do you think someone in their right mind who wanted to kill people would go right around the corner to the next rooming house and call the police on themselves and turn themselves in minutes later?” she said.
She said the man called police and waited for them after the shooting.
The woman, who didn’t want to show her face or give her name, said her boyfriend cried out for help long before the shooting.
“I’m not going to allow anyone to tarnish his image,” she said. “He’s wrong, but he’s mentally ill and he needs help. He’s been asking the state for help.”
She said she’ been dating the alleged gunman for several weeks and noticed some behavioral changes.
“It’s not some days, he’s like this every single day,” the girlfriend said. “He wakes up and the first thing he talks about is evil stuff. And yet you felt safe with him. I felt safe with him because I know how to calm him down.”
People who live in the home told FOX13 two women and a man died at the scene.
Investigators with MPD said they are working to develop a motive behind the shooting.
The investigation is ongoing.
