“When I first woke up, I saw a fire and I didn't know what to do,“ said Ashanti Goolsby, victim's roommate.

Ashanti Goolsby, her boyfriend, and James lived together in a house on Wilson Road. Goolsby said she woke up to the house filled with smoke.

“I had come out of the house and ran down the street to get some help,” Goolsby said.

At the same time, Goolsby's boyfriend grabbed a fire extinguisher to put out the flames but was unable to.

“She was screaming the house is on fire," said Dodie Copelan, friend of the victim. “One wall was on fire and he came out to get a fire extinguisher and it didn’t work.”

We’re told James was paralyzed on one side of her body and used a wheelchair, which is why she could not get out.

Copeland said she is left with fond memories of her friend.

“High strung, she was sweet, she was,” Copeland said.

According to Lt. Wayne Cook, the cause of the fire was determined to be, “accidental as a result of careless use of candles in the bedroom.”

James’ cause of death has not been released.
