MFD firefighter under investigation for allegedly making racist Facebook post

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Fire Department (MFD) is investigating a social media post made by one of its firefighters.

The Facebook post appeared to be racially motivated and was written by Steven W. Chillis.

On Monday, MFD confirmed Chillis has been an employee since March 2020 and said the department does have a social media policy.

The post tags the film ‘The Woman King’ at Malco DeSoto Cinema Grill in Southaven, and reads: “I hope there are some White folks killed.”

All city employees fall under the City of Memphis Personnel manual, which includes a social media policy (PM62-27), MFD said.

The department is conducting an internal investigation into the post.

Chillis remains on duty with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.

When FOX13 reached out to the Memphis Firefighters union, a spokesperson said they are waiting on the investigation to be completed.
