SOUTHAVEN, Miss. — The beginning of the school year is right around the corner.
Whether your kids will be back in the classroom or virtually learn, students need school supplies.
Some Mississippi shoppers decided to buy school supplies during the state’s tax-free weekend.
“The savings are amazing,” said Angela Laster, a shopper. “Just got here, but I actually got a first responders discount in addition to the ten percent at Under Armour.”
Laster had four kids who attend Shelby County Schools.
“Kids aren’t going back but they’re still growing and eating,” Laster said. “They’re out of clothes, so we had to come out and get a few things.”
Laster was one of many families who shopped at the Tanger Outlets in Southaven.
“Hopefully I’ll run into some good deals today,” said Akeem Jones, a shopper. “Back to school shopping.”
Many like Jones braved the pandemic to get their hands on things like clothes, shoes and school supplies.
“Got to take advantage of the deals,” Jones said. “Get out early, shop and get back in.”
The sales tax was not applied to items if the sales price of a single item was less than 100-dollars. A benefit for many families grateful for relief during the pandemic.
"It's a good time to come and get it done because they're going back to school no matter how different it is," Laster said.
Unlike Tennessee’s tax-free weekend, electronics such as computers are not included this weekend.
