Moments leading up to shooting death of 4-year-old boy revealed, according to police

Memphis, Tenn. — Police are revealing more about the moments leading up to the shooting death of a 4-year-old boy Saturday night.

According to the Memphis Police Department, just after 7 p.m. Tavius Taylor was in a minivan with 2 other men and his son, 4-year-old Tavius Taylor Jr.

Police said Taylor pulled up at 1055 West Lexington Circle in North Memphis to drop off one of the men in the car when Terrell Woods, 40, jumped in front of the van.

Taylor told police that Woods yelled “Y’all been hating on me!” and opened fire, shooting through the passenger-side door, according to the arrest affidavit.

Taylor said he looked back and saw that his son had been shot, according to court records.

Tavius Taylor Jr. was rushed to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital but was soon pronounced dead.

Woods now faces one count of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder.
