Family identifies 7-year-old boy shot and killed during Fourth of July triple shooting

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A 7-year-old is dead and two adults were injured after a 4th of July shooting in North Memphis.

Memphis police said officers responded to a shooting around 11 p.m. Sunday in the 700 block of N. Montgomery.

The two adults were rushed to Regional One in critical condition, and the child was pronounced dead at the scene.

Family identified the 7-year-old as Kelby Shorty.

The adults were later released.

People in the neighborhood told FOX13 they came together to shoot fireworks and celebrate the holiday, but that changed when things started to wind down.

Residents said a gunman shot into the crowd, hitting the three victims.

Many told FOX13 the gunman fired between 10 to 12 shots.

One neighbor said several children and other adults were still outside celebrating when the shots rang out.

The neighbor said they all ran for cover when the gunman opened fire.

Memphis Police hope that a Sky Cop Camera on utility police recorded the entire crime and can help identify the car and gunman.

The suspects fled in a gray Mazda sedan, police said.

The suspects are believed to be known but are not yet in custody.

The investigation is ongoing.
