MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis police are still trying to figure out what led to another child killed in the Bluff City.
This time, it happened at Highland Chateau apartments in Raleigh.
A source called what happened a shootout.
A source said a witness may have captured a video of the Sunday shooting.
People who heard the gunshots said they can’t believe this shooting marks the 31st child killed in Memphis this year.
Gun violence has led to the death of three of those children in just the past few weeks.
“It was like, pow, pow, then there was a break and then there was another pow, pow,” said Pat Lacey who lives in the complex.
Lacey said she heard three to five gunshots Sunday afternoon where Memphis police say an 8-year-old girl was shot and killed. Another neighbor said it sounded like fireworks, while others say it sounded like a rifle.
“It just breaks my heart. I promise it just breaks my heart, makes me want to cry, and I didn’t even know her,” Lacey explained.
FOX13 saw at least two Memphis police cars entering the gate at the apartment complex one day after the little girl was gunned down.
Neighbors were left wondering why anyone would kill a child.
“It’s too much gun violence going on around here, so it’s sad, my heart goes out to the family,” said Seretha Callicett, a neighbor.
Memphis City Councilwoman Rhonda Logan said this shooting death raises questions about safety and security at apartment complexes. She plans to talk with the property manager this week.
“We don’t want to see any more children murdered in their own home,” Logan said.
“He’s got to be or she whoever it was, they have to be accountable for what they have done so that’s something they have to take up with God,” Callicett stated.
