Neighbors & family want answers after elderly man shot at local park

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A 79-year-old man is recovering after getting shot early Tuesday morning in Memphis.

Officials responded just after 5 a.m. to Western Park Drive in Westwood Park for a shooting.

Relatives told FOX13 he was out for his morning walk in the park.

The man was shot and rushed to Regional One in critical condition.

“It is a shame because I have never known him to do anything to anybody,” said a neighbor.

The woman who lives next door to the victim and didn’t want to be identified told us that the 79-year-old victim is a nice man who never bothers anybody.

Family members, who also didn’t want to go on camera, said he comes to this park to walk every morning and only lives a few minutes away.

There are SkyCop cameras at the entrance to the park, but they face away from the scene of the shooting.

The victim’s neighbor called the shooting tragic, but she’s not surprised.

”That is nothing new,” she said. “There is shooting everywhere. everybody has the right to pick up a gun or break in a car and steal one, and they slap them on the hand and they are out the next day.”

MPD said they are still investigating the shooting.

In the meantime, the neighbor is worried about her neighbor and his family. She hopes whoever did the shooting is caught.

”I hope they do if I knew who it was I would tell them myself,” she said.

Memphis Police told us this afternoon they do not know what led to the shooting and also do not yet have information about who shot the man, whose name has not been released.
