Torchy’s Tacos, other new businesses creates buzz in East Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — New businesses in East Memphis are bringing in more customers and employees.

Torchy’s Tacos, a Texas-based taco chain, is officially opening in the shopping center off Mendenhall Road near Spottswood Avenue.

The restaurant opens Thursday at 10 a.m. at 719 S. Mendenhall.

Construction for other businesses in the area is still ongoing.

Neighbors who live nearby the shopping center said they are ecstatic.

“You can just walk there now, yeah you don’t have to drive anywhere,” said Hanna Rutherford.

At the same time, Rutherford is prepared for more traffic.

She said when other businesses like the Hen House and Greys Fine Cheeses opened up in the shopping center, she noticed more people parking in the neighborhood.

“We were thinking this is going to start looking like Cooper-Young a little with people parking in the neighborhood,” said Rutherford.

Other neighbors like Karen Card are not happy.

She is worried about an increase in crime and said it’s hard to drive down Spottswood Avenue when dozens of cars are parked on the street.

“For the most part it’s been a pretty nice, quiet neighborhood and I’d like to keep it that way if possible,” said Card.

FOX13 reached out to Jonathan Aur, who does commercial sales and leasing for Boyle investment company.

He oversees the shopping center off Mendenhall.

Aur said there are no plans to expand parking but said once construction on another business is finished there will be more parking in the back.

Still, some argue this is not enough.

“Most of the people in the neighborhood are the older generation of people. It’s not like we can pick up and mix today. I can’t afford that,” said Card.
