One dead after a house fire in Orange Mound, homicide investigation underway, officials say

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A homicide investigation continues after a house fire early Tuesday morning in Orange Mound.

Memphis firefighters went to the home around 5 a.m. and found a man dead inside.

”It really makes you afraid,” said Brenda Jamerson. “You just have to stay on your Ps and Qs.”

Jamerson was scared and confused after learning of her neighbor’s death in his own home is the only way she could describe her emotions.

When firefighters arrived they found the body of Willie Cowans.

”He was a very nice man,” she said, " Stayed to himself. Drove all over Memphis picking up things.”

After getting the fire and smoke under control Memphis Police then stepped in and began a homicide investigation.

Cowans’s next-door neighbor told us he believes the death involved foul play because two of Cowans’ vehicles are missing from his driveway.

”When I got off from work last night he was parked there,” he said.

Neighbors said they don’t understand who or what would drive a person to kill Cowans.

”It’s just so close to home you know,” neighbors said.

Memphis Police have not developed a suspect in this case.
