Man dead after shooting at Stratum on Highland apartments, police say

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police are investigating an overnight shooting that left a man dead at the Stratum on Highland apartments.

Memphis Fire officials confirmed they received a shooting call at the apartments at 10:35 p.m. Sunday night.

MPD officers arrived at 10:39 p.m. to the apartment building, located at 510 S. Highland.

They found one man, who had been shot.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

When FOX13′s crew arrived, homicide investigators were at the scene.

The Stratum on Highland is a five-minute walk from the University of Memphis, and many students live at the complex. Those who spoke with FOX13 Monday morning said this latest shooting adds to the tension they’re already feeling after two other recent attacks: the kidnapping and murder of a jogger, and a deadly shooting rampage.

“It’s a little concerning especially because no details have come out about the suspect,” said Alex Wall, a UofM student who lives at the Stratum.

“It’s definitely concerning because I live pretty close nearby and I’m on campus every day,” said another student, Julie Dunaway. “I park here and I have a male classmate walk me back every day because I don’t want to walk to my car by myself. "

While both students said the attacks have increased their awareness, they said they still feel a sense of security on campus.

“I hope they’re isolated incidents,” said Dunaway. “I still feel safe. The best you can do is be aware make sure you know where you’re going, make sure someone knows where you are, just precautions we’ve got to take every single day.”

“It’s made me a little more cautious just walking around, but the university has a lot of good resources, so around this area, I still feel pretty safe,” added Wall.

The UofM issued its list of resources after the abduction and shooting spree, which included an emergency app and escort program.

It added a reminder that UofM is ranked as the safest large campus in the State of Tennessee, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s 2021 Crime on Campus Report.

No suspect information was released on the shooting at the Stratum.
