OXFORD, Miss. — Disturbing details come to light after a hazing incident at Ole Miss.
Police said a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity sprayed bleach in a pledge’s mouth in October of last year.
FOX13 got the police report that details what happened and the fact that the pledge may need surgery.
According to the police report, the incident happened at the Pi Kappa Alpha house on the Ole Miss campus on the night of October 11th.
Statements from an anonymous pledge detail what happened that night and led to the arrest of James Bowes Higgins.
Part of the report reads “We’re asked to sit in the hallway, the anonymous reporting stated, the actives yelled and screamed and threw liquids and things at the pledges.”
But it didn’t stop there.
“The reporting party stated the pledges had to do wall squats or 90 against the wall while reciting phrases,” the report read.
Here is where it goes from bad to worse.
The police report states, “At this particular Sunday meeting while everyone was blindfolded an active grabbed a bottle of bleach or surface cleaner and started spraying it on a few pledges, during this time one of the pledges through up from inhaling some of the substance in his mouth and another had to go to the hospital because he got bleach in his eyes. "
Police charged Higgins with Aggravated assault.
A lawyer for the injured pledge said his client has serious injuries to his esophagus and can’t eat regularly and may need surgery.
The family plans to sue the fraternity which has been sanctioned.
The fraternity issued a statement:
“Pi Kappa Alpha International Fraternity is aware of an alleged assault involving a former member of Gamma Iota Chapter at the University of Mississippi. We express our full support and sympathies to the victim, who is a current member of the chapter, and his family. Following this incident last fall, the International Fraternity worked closely with the university to hold the former member responsible. This individual was subsequently expelled from the chapter, and additional sanctions were placed on the chapter.
The Pi Kappa Alpha International Fraternity does not tolerate any activities that do not treat individuals with dignity and respect. Any member of Pi Kappa Alpha should immediately and confidentially report any harmful activity to the International Fraternity here.”
