”It’s pretty safe over here. I want to live here for a long time, so this surprises me, " said Millington resident Ashley Street.
Street, a mother of four, was heartbroken to learn a neighborhood boy was shot and killed on Currie Road in Millington Sunday by another child.
“We have guns, but they are in a safe where they’re supposed to be. That’s what you should do, especially when you have children, no matter what age,” said Street.
The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office said the victim was Justin Garcia. Officers said Garcia was rushed to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
“It’s really sad because this is a good neighborhood,“ said Street.
According to the sheriff’s office, another child, whose name is not being released, has been charged with reckless homicide.
Street said this is a warning for parents to teach their kids guns are not toys.
“I was raised around guns, and my father made sure he taught me everything about guns. I’ve done the same with my kids, and he has done it with my kids, to make sure they know it is not a toy and leave it alone,” said Street.
