SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — Update 6:10 p.m.:
SCSO told FOX13 that the Search and Rescue team have located a body in the Mississippi River near the Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park boat ramp.
“If you look behind us, obviously the Mississippi River, it looks kind of tranquil right now,” said John Morris. “But it’s a, I think it’s a beast as they say.”
That harsh reality that Morris from the Shelby County Sherriff’s Office spoke on revealed itself Sunday.
Morris said after the sheriff’s office received a call around 7:30 this morning that someone was in distress, the body of a male was found in the Mississippi River around 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
Morris said the victim was fishing at Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park.
“He got caught up in the undertow or caught up in the water and he went under the water,” he said.
Morris said the search included 50 people across seven different agencies and reached a 14-mile area.
He said the body was found not too far from the sandbar where the male was fishing.
“Pray for the victim and the family of the victim,” said Morris. “The second thing is be cognizant of water safety. The Mississippi River is a huge river.”
This was the second call of distress at the park, with a near-drowning reported on Tuesday.
Morris mentioned the drowning of 15-year-old Prince Stewart last month in the Loosahatchie River to caution the public.
Stewart’s body was found exactly a month ago on June 19.
“The undercurrent and the just the muddy force of the Mississippi is nothing to be reckoned with,” said Morris. “So please, please ensure we use water safety at all times.”
The search included about 50 people across 7 different agencies reaching a 14-mile area.
Officials told FOX13 the body will be taken to the forensic center for a positive ID.
