SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — The death of an inmate inside 201 Poplar has family members and Shelby County Commissioners pushing for answers.
The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office said the preliminary investigation showed inmate Tommy Young committed suicide on Saturday night.
In January, Commissioner Tami Sawyer requested the jail audit for 2019 and while she’s waiting on that, she’s pushing for a new audit this year. This time she said she wants an independent auditor to look at the facilities.
“We need to aggressively reduce our jail population. Overcrowding leads to stress of not just the inmates but stress on actual correction officers,” Sawyer explained.
FOX13 reached out to the Mayor’s office and asked them who performed the jail audit in 2019. We were told we have to fill out an open records request. We will let you know when we have that information back.
