Shelby County Sheriff’s Office mourns the loss of deputy sheriff

Shelby County, Tenn. — The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office announced the death of one of their own on Thursday.

According to SCSO, deputy sheriff Ray McCrary died Tuesday at the age of 52.

McCrary was a 24-year veteran of the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, spending the last 9 years with the Civil/Levy Unit, the sheriff’s office said.

McCrary joined law enforcement after graduating from the University of Memphis, where he attended on scholarship and completed his certification as a brick mason.

In his earlier years, McCrary attended Christian Brother’s High School and played football as a lineman on the All-Metro football team.

In a statement, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office said, “He was a husband, father, grandfather, and a great friend to all in the Civil/Levy Unit. Please keep Deputy Ray McCrary and his family in your thoughts and prayers.”
