Suspect charged with attempted murder after shooting at Tennessee police officer, officials say

HOUSTON COUNTY, Tenn. — A suspect is in custody after allegedly shooting at a Tennessee police officer.

BJ Brown was wanted by the Erin Police Department and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) for the attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer.

According to the TBI, the shooting happened in a parking area on Highway 149 in Erin.

The officer tried to stop a driver, later identified as BJ Brown. The officer was injured when the driver got out of his car with a firearm and fired into the officer’s vehicle, the TBI said.

The officer returned fire, and Brown ran into a wooded area, still carrying a firearm.

The officer was taken by helicopter to a Nashville hospital for treatment.

TBI issued a Blue Alert for Brown on Tuesday. He was taken into custody Wednesday after a state-wide manhunt.

Around 6:30 Wednesday morning, law enforcement officers spotted Brown about two miles from the location where the shooting happened. He was taken into custody and charged with one count of Attempted First Degree Murder.

Officials said Brown, 32, was also wanted in connection with a shooting that happened Monday in New Orleans.

He is currently being held in the Houston County Jail.
