Two arrested after woman shot and killed at Memphis hotel in 2020, police say

Memphis, Tenn — Two people were arrested after a woman was shot and killed at a Memphis hotel last year, according to the Memphis Police Department.

In October, police responded to a call around 3 a.m. at a Real Value Inn hotel in the 3800 block of Lamar Avenue, according to an affidavit.

When the officers arrived, they saw Tammy Hawthorne shot and dead, police said.

The Shelby Couty Medical examiner ruled the death to be a homicide.

Officials used surveillance video to come up with a suspect. The suspect’s picture was released to the media which led to a Crime Stopper’s tip that helped investigators identify the man as Randall French.

According to an affidavit, investigators got a warrant for his Facebook account and found French discussing the homicide with Taylor Williams. This led them to also get a warrant for Williams.

Williams listed the car used in the homicide for sale hours later, the same day that Hawthrone was killed, police said.

On Friday, Williams was arrested. She told police that she shot and killed Hawthrone and sold the car she used during the homicide.

Williams told police that French drove her to the hotel and drove her away after she killed Hawthrone, according to an affidavit.

French was also arrested. He told police he did not shoot Hawthorne although he drove the car, police said.

Williams was charged with first-degree murder and French was charged with facilitation of murder, police said.
