WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. — The West Memphis School District will require all students to carry clear backpacks beginning with the 2022-2023 school year.
The district announced the policy change on Wednesday, sharing the information in a Facebook post.
The school board approved the change on June 21.
The change applies to students in grades Kindergarten-12.
According to the district, students will be able to use band and athletic bags, purses, and lunch bags which are subject to search and wanding.
Many parents had strong reactions to the announcement and shared their thoughts in the Facebook comments.
“Those cheap plastic backpacks aren’t gonna be able to hold 4, 2-inch ring binders and all the other supplies the schools have parents buy that the kids don’t use,” one comment read.
Another parent brought up privacy concerns.
