MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Are you willing to wear a face mask along with a shield or goggles to protect yourself from COVID-19? Dr. Anthony Fauci said it’s something to consider.
FOX13 spoke to health experts about if the extra gear is necessary.
"I think it is very important we wear face shields right now, because we're not sure how this really spreads," said Kathi Drown, shopper.
While Drown was out shopping with her family, she protected herself from COVID-19 by wearing a face mask and shades.
"I want to protect other people, and I want people to look out for me being an older person," Drown said.
This week Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, said wearing goggles or a face shield with a mask would offer better protection from the coronavirus.
"Every way you can cover mucous membranes will add protection. That would include ones that cover the eyes, and that would be a shield or a goggle," said Steve Threlkeld, MD/ Baptist Hospital Infectious Disease Specialist.
Across several Mid-South counties, wearing a face mask that covers the nose and mouth was already required.
Are goggles and face shields next?
“I’m not sure I can see it becoming mandatory in the really near future,” Threlkeld said. “As Dr. Fauci mentioned too, it’s not even universally recommended at this point.”
Although, face shields and goggles are not required, Drown welcomed the idea.
"I don't think it's too much at all. Until we get a vaccine or something. You can never be too safe," said Drown.
While Dr. Fauci recommended this, he has not pushed wearing goggles because they’re not as easily available as a mask.
