Woman charged in shooting death of elderly woman in South Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A woman is charged in the shooting death of an elderly woman in Memphis.

On July 24, officers responded to a shooting in the 300 block of Lauderdale Street in South Memphis.

According to an affidavit, police found a 64-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Paramedics pronounced the woman dead at the scene.

Witnesses, including a 13-year-old who was shot at but not struck, told police there had been an altercation the day before with a female suspect.

One witness said the suspect was armed and gave police a description of her vehicle and tag number, records show.

Police discovered the vehicle was registered to Shakenya Poney, 24.

Poney was identified during a photo lineup.

She is charged with Second Degree Murder and three counts of Attempted Second Degree Murder, records show.
