Memphis, Tenn. — A child was fatally stabbed at an apartment complex in Raleigh, according to police, who Saturday said the girl was stabbed by her mother. Police said that woman stabbed her sister in the same attack.
Police responded to the Huntington Hills apartments in the 2800 block of Coach Dr. last night, according to a Twitter alert sent at about 9:45 p.m. Friday. They said a person had been detained.
Police said it’s a “domestic violence situation.”
Saturday morning, police identified the suspect as 29-year-old Lawrencia Reed. Police said she stabbed her 10-year-old daughter, who was taken to LeBonheur Children’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police said.
The 18-year-old victim was taken to Regional One Health in critical condition.
A woman, who said she was visiting her daughter nearby said she heard screams coming from the apartment where Reed lived.
“They was like ‘mom stop, mom stop’ and I’m thinking they were playing,” said the woman, whom FOX13 is choosing not to identify for her protection.
She said the screams coming from the apartment and the aftermath left her haunted. She said the 18-year-old victim, the suspect’s sister, ran from the apartment and collapsed outside.
“There was blood everywhere … that’s when I called the police,” she said. “She didn’t say anything.”
Police have not disclosed a motive.
Reed is charged with one count of first-degree murder and three counts of criminal attempt first degree murder, police said.
