MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - A Tennessee attorney has been charged with stealing more than $250,000 from clients by forging their signatures on settlement checks.

The Shelby County district attorney's office said Tuesday that 49-year-old Michael Skouteris was arrested Monday. Prosecutors say Skouteris has been indicted on charges including theft of property and forgery.

Investigators say Skouteris defrauded seven clients in cases dating from 2011 to 2016. The cases involved nursing home neglect, medical malpractice, personal injury and worker's compensation.

Skouteris also has been charged with stealing from his law firm. He was suspended from practicing law and ordered not to make any withdrawals from the firm's trust account without authority to do so. The indictment says Skouteris still withdrew money from the account.

Online court records do not show if Skouteris has a lawyer.
