NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A former sheriff's department employee in Tennessee is facing charges of stealing from the office's evidence room.

According to a Tennessee Bureau of Investigation news release, 53-year-old Tony Barrett was indicted Friday on charges of theft under $1,000 and official misconduct in Cannon County, about 60 miles (96 kilometers) southeast of Nashville.

TBI says that in June it began investigating a reported theft from the Cannon County Sheriff's Department evidence room. TBI says it developed information that the person responsible for the theft is Barrett, a former civilian worker who is no longer employed by the sheriff's department.

Authorities say Barrett was arrested Friday and booked into the Cannon County Jail with a bond set at $10,000.

It was not immediately clear if Barrett has hired an attorney.
