JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Florida woman was fatally shot Sunday when her neighbor was cleaning his gun and a round accidentally fired into her home, investigators said.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said Jennifer Edelen, 47, was shot in the head Sunday afternoon in what investigators called a “tragic accident,” WJAX reported.
The neighbor, who has not been identified, was cleaning a gun when it discharged into her home about 50 yards away, investigators said. Edelen was standing in the front room of her home when she was struck.
Edelen was a mother of four. Only one young child was in the home at the time of the shooting, investigators said. That child called for help. Jacksonville Fire and Rescue arrived and pronounced Edelen dead at the scene.
The neighbor is cooperating with investigators. The sheriff’s office will work with the State Attorney’s Office to determine that it was an accident, or if charges will be filed.
The family set up a crowdsourced funding account to help pay for funeral arrangements.
