Johnnie Walker scotch whiskey will soon receive a makeover, and green is all the rage.
Diageo Plc, the world’s largest spirits maker, announced Monday the iconic bar staple will be available in plastic-free bottles beginning in early 2021, Reuters reported.
The new Johnnie Walker bottle, developed in partnership with venture management company Pilot Lite, will be fully recyclable and crafted from wood pulp that meets food-grade standards, the global news service reported.
According to the BBC, Diageo and Pilot Lite will co-launch a firm called Pulpex to enable the Johnnie Walker trial next spring. The sustainable packaging company will also produce packaging for brands such as Lipton, Unilever and PepsiCo.
Diageo – which also makes Guinness, Tanqueray gin and Smirnoff vodka - confirmed to the BBC it currently uses less than 5% of plastic in its total packaging.
