19-year-old charged in attempted murder of SCSO detective, police say

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — On Jan. 27, around 3 p.m., Shelby County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a scene at Elder Road and Daggett Road.

Detectives had been in the area earlier in response to a carjacking, according to an affidavit.

Detectives located a Dodge Charger that had been taken at gunpoint during a carjacking.

Four to five men were near the Charger, as well as a stolen Jeep.

When SCSO activated their blue lights, the Charger fled. The driver in the Jeep also tried to flee but got stuck on a curb.

During a pursuit, the Charger wrecked on Elder Road.

Four men got out of the car, and at least three were armed with rifles and pistols, according to the affidavit.

One man fired approximately two shots at a detective.

SCSO located one suspect and took him to 201 Poplar. It appeared he had dropped a gun at the scene, according to the affidavit.

Detectives searched his cell phone and found video that showed the inside of the stolen Jeep and also the Charger.

The video was taken approximately one hour after the carjacking, according to the affidavit.

The suspect said he was in the area where the Charger was but denied knowing who was with him. He also told police he was inside the stolen Jeep.

Police found another video on the cell phone showing him and two other men inside the Jeep armed with guns.

One of the men was wearing the same clothing as the person who shot at a detective, according to the affidavit.

David Elion II, 19, was identified in a photo lineup as the person who shot at the detective.

Elion was also identified in photos from the cell phone.

Elion is charged with Attempted First Degree Murder and other crimes.
