Local high school senior wins $10k grant for possible COVID-19 vaccine

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A 17-year-old Germantown student is being awarded for his work to find a possible vaccine for COVID-19.

The Houston High School senior began looking for a possible vaccine as part of a science fair project.

Harshu Pande has been part of the National Society for High School Scholars since he was a freshman.

After entering online to win a $10,000 grant for his work with two infectious disease doctors at UT Health Science Center, Pande found out he won the award.

His project, called Reverse Vaccinology, will now go into the testing stages.

Pande said he’s working along professors at UT Health Science Center and says the win has him encouraging other students to take chances and pursue research.

Parde said he’s been inspired by his parents, who work as radiologists here in Memphis.

His mother works at Methodist, and his dad works at LeBonheur Children’s Hospital.
