MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man has been indicted in the shooting death of his girlfriend this summer in Whitehaven.
Jockuss Askew, 29, was indicted by a grand jury on counts of first-degree murder and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, according to a release from Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.
Askew and his girlfriend reportedly got into an argument with his girlfriend, Kanya Brown, 27, on June 5.
The pair shared an apartment together in the 4300 block of Eastwind Drive, according to the release.
Askew told police he accidentally shot Brown during the argument, according to an affidavit.
Askew said Brown had threatened him with a knife.
Brown suffered a gunshot wound to the head and died the next day in the hospital.
Police found the gun under a mattress in a bedroom, according to the affidavit.
Askew was previously arrested for Aggravated Robbery.
He is being held in the Shelby County Jail.
