MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Barbecue is a given when you think about Memphis and Leonard’s Pit Barbecue is one of the businesses that’s survived for nearly a century.
Dan Brown is the owner of Leonard’s. He took over the business in 1993.
“This all I have ever done,” said Brown. “We are not the biggest but we are certainly the oldest and certainly a Memphis institution that I would hate to see go away.”
His career with the restaurant began nearly 30 years before buying the BBQ joint.
“I started working here in 1962 at 15 years old. My parents knew Leonard Highberger,” Brown said.
Brown says his plans don’t include the doors of the business closing but selling it to someone who is ready to handle and take the business to the next level.
“I’m hoping it’s someone who is local and with the passion for the restaurant business and someone that will keep it going forever. Things are getting better as we speak but at my age, I need to think about cutting back some,” Brown said.
Brown said for now he’ll continue being the head man. He’s hoping a new lead can come soon and hopefully keep him around.
“I hope Leonard’s is here forever and I hope I’m here for as long as I can be,” Brown said.
