Memphis sees record-breaking year of homicides in 2020

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis police are investigating another shooting in the city during a record-breaking year of violence.

A man was killed and a woman was critically injured Tuesday night in a parking lot outside a southeast Memphis Walmart.

Police have not made any arrests in the shooting.

MPD said they are hoping the information they gather from surveillance cameras will help in the search for a killer.

Memphis has seen a grim year of increasing homicide numbers in 2020.

As of Monday morning, police reported 323 homicides for the year.

By Tuesday the number was 326.

In 2019, 2018 and 2017 the number of homicides didn’t pass 200.

In 2016, the city reported 228 homicides.
