Memphis, Tenn. — A grandmother is dead and one of her relatives is behind bars for her murder, police said.
According to an affidavit, MPD said they were conducting a welfare check at 4617 Cimmaron Drive when they gained entry into the house and saw blood splattered across the floor. Sitting there in the living room smoking a cigarette wad Crystal Branch, 53, MPD said.
As officers continued to search the house, they found Callie Branch, 73, with stab wounds to her hands, body, neck, and ears.
Callie Branch was rushed to the hospital where she later died.
Police arrested Crystal Branch. When asked why she killed Callie Branch she allegedly told police, “I stabbed her because she threatened to call the police on me for not taking my medicine.”.
Callie Branch’s granddaughter saw the whole thing and said her aunt was acting strange right before the attack.
According to the granddaughter, Crystal asked her if she would do things if God told her to do them even if they were bad. When the granddaughter pressed her aunt on what she meant, she allegedly responded that she was being told to murder.
According to the paperwork, the granddaughter went to her room, and soon after, heard screaming and came out to see Crystal stabbing her grandmother.
The granddaughter tried to get her aunt off of her grandmother but wasn’t able to, police said.
Crystal Branch is charged with First-Degree Murder, Aggravated Assault, Vulnerable Adult Abuse, and Domestic Assault Resulting in Bodily Harm.
