Police identify robbery suspect who died after fight with MLGW employee

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — UPDATE 9/25/20: Memphis Police identified the man who died as 29-year-old JC Payne IV.

ORIGINAL STORY:

A man is dead after an altercation with an MLGW employee, according to Memphis police.

Police responded to a robbery Wednesday night around 6:30 p.m. in the 4000 block of Michael Road.

An MLGW employee had parked his work truck in front of a home.

He was working in the back of the home, trying to restore power to the area, according to police.

When he returned to his truck, an unknown man was inside the truck.

The man inside the truck reportedly hit the victim in the face, and a struggle ensued.

According to police, officers detained the suspect and requested an ambulance for both parties due to injuries.

The MLGW employee was taken to Baptist East in non-critical condition.

According to police, the suspect was taken to Methodist South in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead.

The cause of death has not been determined.

The victim has been detained, and the investigation is ongoing.
