West Helena police searching for man wanted for murder near elementary school

HELENA-WEST HELENA, Ark. — Police in West Helena, Ark. have arrested a man for the murder of another man near an elementary school.

On Oct. 5 at approximately 3:34 p.m. the Helena-West Helena Police Department responded to a shooting on N. 10th Street near KIPP Delta Elementary.

According to a release from the police department, the school was put on lockdown.

Officers found a man identified as Travis Belk, 36, lying in the road with a gunshot wound.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, according to police.

Witnesses said they saw a man firing shots toward vehicles when Belk walked into the line of fire.

Damarious White, 28, was identified as a suspect during an investigation.

According to the release, White is wanted for Murder in the First Degree, Aggravated Assault, Terroristic Act and Possession of Firearm by Certain Persons.
