5 tropical storms already recorded during this year's hurricane season

Hurricane Matthew was a major Category 4 cyclone when it approached Florida on Oct. 6, 2016.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Hurricane season has been in full effect for 2 months, and we have already recorded 5 tropical systems.

Out of all 5 systems, only two of them have made landfall in the United States. Tropical Storm Cindy formed in the Gulf of Mexico about 265 miles south of Morgan City, Louisiana on June 20th.

Two days later, Cindy made landfall just south of Lake Charles, Louisiana. The storm produced 2.01 inches of rain here in Memphis. Rainfall totally 18.74 inches was recorded near Ocean Springs, Mississippi. Cindy also spawned 6 tornadoes including one EF2.

On Monday morning, the second system to make landfall (Tropical Storm Emily) developed off the west coast of Florida and made landfall shortly afterwards on Anna Maria Island. Emily brought torrential downpours to the Tampa area, causing major roadways to shut down due to flooding. Strong winds also caused the Sunshine Skyway, a key Tampa bridge to shut down for most of Monday. Two fisherman were also stranded in Tampa Bay after their boat sank, thankfully they were not injured.

While we have had 5 systems develop, none of those storms have made it to hurricane season, which is not unusual.

As the graph above shows, the most common time period for hurricane development is Aug. 16-31. This is not that surprising given that tropical activity typically heats up in the second half of August and peaks on September 11th. Hurricanes Humberto (2013) and Gustav (2002) holds the record as the latest hurricanes to develop in the Atlantic basin, developing on September 11.

We are just getting into the thick of hurricane season!  It officially last June 1- Nov 30, but systems occasionally develop outside of these months. A total of 15 named storms and eight hurricanes are now expected to develop in the Atlantic basin. Three of the eight hurricanes are forecast to be Category 3 or stronger on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. This forecast is above the 30-year historical average (1981-2010) for the Atlantic Basin of 12 named storms, six hurricanes and three major hurricanes.
