MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Instead of tipping, customers at a Wolfchase area restaurant left a racist note for their waiter. The picture of the receipt has since gone viral.

Nathan Bergeron told FOX13 being a restaurant waiter isn’t the most promising way to make money.

"So every two weeks I get a check and it's zero dollars,” Bergeron said.

However, he said the job does have its ups when customers leave good tips.

"There are days where it will range 20 bucks on a shift to like two hundred,” Bergeron said.

Bergeron said he waited on a table of three Sunday at a Wolfchase area restaurant.

After closing out their bill, the waiter claims the two adults and a teen wrote on their bill, “We don’t tip white people lol.”

Bergeron, who is currently homeless, said he is working 50 to 60 hours a week at the restaurant to make money.

"During the time, I didn't know it was going to be a table that wasn't going to tip based on the color of anyone’s skin,” Bergeron said.

Bergeron said the customer’s final bill of $47 and some change should have been the result of a $3 to $5 tip.

Bergeron said at this point in his life, every penny has a purpose especially when it comes to him finding a stable living arrangement.

"I hate that it happened and I hate that's the way they feel especially if it's something of prejudice keeping them back from doing something good for someone else,” Bergeron said.

Bergeron said this message won’t keep him from doing his job.

"Everyone has the things they like and dislike, and even if you are going to be prejudice, why make it known and make it a big issue?” Bergeron asked.

Friends of Bergeron have set up a GoFundme account to help as he continues to find a stable living arrangement.
