Rap music, with its sometimes violent lyrics and racy images, is blamed for a batch of problems including the rise in crime among teens and young adults.
Rap artist Memphis Jelks, who recently signed on with Public Enemy's Chuck D, hit the brakes after a record breaking year for murders.
The total number of violent killings in Memphis last year was 228.
Jelks said he is tired of murder in Memphis so his new rap states "think before your shoot".
The rapper said he is already getting participation from young people on his Facebook page.
He said young rap fans are just as sick of the crime.
